The Jewish Quarter

ABOUT THE TOUR

The history of the creation and development of Kazimierz, today one of the districts of Krakow, is turbulent. In the 15th century, the city was divided into a Christian zone with Catholic churches and a Jewish zone, which in its moment of splendor boasted seven synagogues, a ritual bathhouse, a cemetery and a slaughterhouse. For 500 years Poles with different religions were able to live together like neighbors. The outbreak of the Second World War changed everything.

Both the walking tour and bike tour with a licensed guide passthrough small streets and numerous corners of today’s Kazimierz. The stories relate to the tradition, culture and religiosity of the inhabitants of this place. Symbolically, we will cross the Vistula River, a river separating two cities – Kazimierz and Podgórze, constituting a story about the life and death of Poles of the Mosaic faith.

In the ghetto, we will tell a tragic and sad story, we will mention the heroes and traitors. But we will also mention the rehearsal and successes of renewing the Jewish community in Krakow’s Kazimierz. We will talk about numerous festivals, the promotion of culture and tradition, about today’s relations.
